With the expectation of scenes in Kings Landing and the land of the Dothraki pretty much all of the huge HBO show Game of Thrones is filmed in Northern Ireland. It seems like the show is filmed all over the world but this small country in the United Kingdom has been able to double as the land of Westeros (along with some able help from locations in Iceland, Greece, Croatia and Spain) for most of the time. The great thing is that you can pretty much visit many of the locations where the show was filmed in Northern Ireland and the South as well. Winter is coming is one of the most famous lines from the show and you will certainly need a net set of Aran Sweaters from Shamrock Gift Aran Sweater to keep the chill out.
The tourist industry in Northern Ireland has been admirably quick to make the most of the place and it’s new found fame. Due to tax incentives offered from the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont and the diverse landscape of the country it made the perfect choice for HBO to make the show there. As they were using mainly British and European character actors for the parts this added to the draw.
It is very easy to visit the sites where the show was filmed. Castle Ward doubled as Winterfell and the Mourne Mountains were used for sites in the North in general. One of the most interesting places was the Dark Hedges of Ballymoney which has a very strange appearance and feel regardless of whether it was in a fantasy book or not.
