How often do you think about the curtains or blinds at your window? The answer is probably not since you had a Tewkesbury Blinds company come in to fit them. There is a whole history around the dressings that you choose to have at your windows and we thought we would share some of these interesting facts with you.

The Roman blinds that we have today have been developed following the ingenious way that the ancient Romans prevented dust and all manner of debris from blowing into their homes and palaces. They would place damp pieces of cloth over their windows and doorways. This design worked so well that we have further adapted this to give us the Roman blinds that you can see today.

Blinds have also been discovered in Egyptian times when they used reeds bound together to create a privacy partition that could be placed across windows and doors as well as in certain areas of the room. Much like the room dividers that you can find today. The ancient chinese also did this with bamboo bound together.

Venetian blinds do not come from Venice. Instead they are a creation from Persia where the slatted design was used in their early blind creations.

During Victorian times the window coverings tended to be made from dark coloured material as coloured fabric was incredibly expensive and so the typical colours used in their curtains included navy blue, dark brown and burgundy. You certainly wouldn’t find some of the amazing colours that we have available to us today.
