Granddad Shirts: Nailing the Style in Five Simple Steps

From tea dresses to flares, we have seen a number of blasts from the past making it on to worldwide catwalks in recent years.
An article in Billboard highlights that Jamaican t-shirts and Vivienne Westwood clothing are just a few vintage trends we can expect to see having a fashion revival. But the aptly named ‘granddad shirt’ is another relic from years gone by that is once again appearing on high streets.
Many consumers favour the collarless shirt (which dates back to the 1920s in its original form) for its versatility, comfort and effortlessly stylish appearance. It can easily go from casual daywear into something a little smarter for the evening. But what should you look for in a granddad shirt, and how can you style it to make it less OAP and more VIP?
Get the Right Fit
Getting the right neck fitting for any shirt is important, but a collarless option like the granddad shirt makes your neck visible, and so you’ll need to have the right fit – otherwise tightness or looseness will be more obvious. The nature of the button fastening means that you should opt for a slightly larger size, as you don’t want it to be restrictive. This also applies to the shoulder and torso sizing – while you don’t want the shirt to appear baggy, you also don’t want it to be tight. Ideally, a well-fitting granddad shirt will skim over your chest, allowing you to button up easily, and the sleeves will finish at your wrist bone.
Colours for Occasions
A crisp white granddad shirt with black suit trousers and jacket can have all the formality of a traditional suit with an added twist. It’s perfect for weddings or even job interviews. If you really want to mix it up, then opt for a black shirt with a blazer and smart jeans – although not quite as formal, this look is edgier while still maintaining enough of the ‘smart’ factor to pass for a swanky meal or evening meeting. Mens Farah shirts offer both colours – see http://ejmenswear.com/brands/farah for more information.
Keep It Casual
Granddad shirts are also available in denim – a fabulous piece for spring/summer. Teamed with pale chinos and trainers or sandals, this could be a great look for a family BBQ
