Or as Dick Van Dyke would say in the broken and pathetic excuse for a cockney accent he used “Caamme Bac swoon Mariee Poopppinns”. Ok maybe that’s a little unfair. It’s not as if he was hurting anyone apart from all good cockneys out there. Bert seems to flit from job to job without settling on a course. He is a one-man band, pavement artist, balloon and kite seller and most memorably a chimney sweep. These days being a chimney sweep has got so many hazards to be aware of like the ones Asbestos Removal Birmingham way have to deal with.
For of course Bert does not have access to the internet as he is a character from the early twentieth century. He is in many ways an example of the rigid class system that existed in the UK at the time. It is also a cold hard fact that in four years’ time he and the young boy Michael banks may well be going off to the fields of Flanders and the Somme.
Mary Poppins is a fantastic film of fun and mirth it remains one of Disney’s best known and best loved additions. There is much talk about the sequel which is said to be long overdue. The film has had a successful stage run and this has encouraged Disney to invest in it. They certainly took their time as it has been fifty-four years since the original. There are some comparisons with the second Nanny Mcphee film here in that when Mary does return she is still the same age and still practically perfect in every way. This time Emily Blunt will pick up the umbrella. The film concentrates on what has happened to Michael and his family. It would seem they have suffered a personal tragedy and the story is set some 20 years after the events of the first film. I personally would be interested to see if Michael mentions that he fought in the war as the spectre of another looms over the country.
Although we’ve had a go at Dick Van Dyke. His character Bert is compiling and great fun. He channels the art for his portrayal of Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang for sure. Bert will not be returning for the sequel. Perhaps he stayed in France along with all the other fallen. Dick Van Dyke is the only member of the original team returning but it is not as the lovable cockney Bert he is coming back as the son of elderly Mr Dawes Jnr from the bank.
