The benefits of taking a short break

Trev April 29, 2019 Reviews Comments are off

We all know that getting away from it all is good for us, both physically and mentally. There aren’t many who would say no to the prospect of getting away more often. There is a way that you can get away more often – to take several shorter breaks instead of one big one.

If you find that using your annual leave on one fortnight-long foray abroad makes the rest of the year too dull and depressing, a series of mini breaks spread across the year will keep you with a spring in your step. Planning trips is fun, so who wouldn’t want to do that frequently? Still need convincing?

See more destinations

Imagine how many more places you could visit if you took more breaks in a year. While there’s a lot to be said for travelling to a far-flung destination and immersing yourself in the culture for weeks, taking one weekend break each month for a whole year means you could see 12 new destinations instead of one! Short breaks feel longer

When you’re in a location for just a few days, you’re more likely to fit in more sights and activities. This makes the break feel longer than it actually was. Spending longer in one place, we tend to take things more slowly which can have the effect of making the holiday feel shorter than it was. A short break will leave you feeling re-energised and refreshed, not feeling like you need another holiday.

Hand luggage only

The fastest way through an airport is to have only carry-on luggage and this is all you should need for a short getaway. Nobody enjoys wasting precious holiday time waiting for luggage to arrive on the carousel. If you can fit all you need into carry-on luggage, then you’re free to hop off the plane straight into vacation mood.

Planning is just as fun

We get a real mental boost from the planning and anticipation of a holiday. It motivates us, gives us something to look forward to and gives us more of the feel-good factor. Planning more shorter breaks allows us to feel this great more regularly.

Switch off more easily

For those who struggle to switch off from the demands of work or family commitments, a long holiday can add to this stress. The thought of work piling up or responsibilities not being met can make it hard to relax and switch off. Shorter breaks won’t feel as stressful as you’re only away for a few days and you’re more likely to switch your phone off and have a proper mental break. It’s also far easier to find someone to look after your pets for a short break!

Increase your productivity

Regularly refreshing your brain, like leaving your desk at lunch or going for a walk is well-known to help increase productivity. The same is true of weekend breaks as well. By regularly removing yourself form the pressures of day-to-day life, you achieve the space to help you feel more refreshed when you return.

Save those pennies

Of course, it makes sense that short breaks are going to be cheaper than long ones. They also tend to mean you don’t travel as far, making flights cheaper, as well as hotels as you’re not paying as much for your overnight accommodation.
