Skinny jeans have fluctuated in popularity for decades, but it seems that the fashion for slim-fitting jeans for men is here to stay as the look has become a staple. It’s not always an easy look to wear though, and careful consideration should be given to the style and fit of the jeans, as well as the rest of the outfit. We outline some of the common mistakes, so you can ensure you look stylish in your skinny jeans.

Don’t go too tight
Like any pair of jeans, it’s vital to get the fit of your skinny jeans right. Although they are close-fitting, you should still be able to fit your finger comfortably under the waistband and you should be able pinch the denim on your thigh, grasping around an inch of slack. If you can’t do either of these, the jeans are likely to be too tight and not only will they be uncomfortable, but they will not be flattering. It’s always a good idea to try on a range of styles and sizes to find the best fit. Try out some mens Tommy Hilfiger jeans for example, along with other brands to check the best fit.
Wrong colour for the wrong occasion
Generally speaking, lighter coloured jeans tend to be more suited to a casual look, for daytime wear, while darker coloured skinny jeans look stylish for a smarter look. If you are wearing the jeans for a smarter occasion, or even to work now that formal workwear is becoming less popular, a pair of mens Tommy Hilfiger jeans for example – deep, dark indigo denim look both stylish and smart.
Wearing the wrong shoes
The narrower the trouser leg, the more visible your shoes are, so it’s even more important to get the shoes right when wearing skinnies. The type of shoe you wear with a pair of skinny jeans will depend on the overall outfit. For example, trainers will suit a relaxed casual outfit, while a more formal shoe is better suited to a smarter look. As well as being more noticeable, a narrow trouser leg and tapered ankle cuffs also make shoes appear larger so do keep this in mind.
