Installing a chandelier can give your room a real lift, but you need to be sure you hang it correctly. Check the instructions that came with the fitting to ensure that you install an appropriate support, particularly if the chandelier is heavier than the fitting you are replacing. You will find the process much easier with someone to help you.
Remove the existing fitting
Before you start, turn off the appropriate circuit and check that there is no power running to the fitting. If the fitting is large or heavy, remove any detachable parts such as bulbs and glass shades. This will make it easier to take the fitting down without breaking anything.
Ensure you or your helper have a good grip on the fitting and use a screwdriver or wrench to undo the screws or lock nuts that secure the fitting to the ceiling. Do not let it hang on the wiring.
Check how the wires are connected and make a note of this. If it is not easy to identify the different wires, mark them with coloured tape before disconnecting them and removing the fitting.
Install support for the chandelier
Ensure the power is off and determine how heavy your new chandelier is. Luxury chandeliers can be surprisingly heavy so you may need to install a box or fan brace to support its weight.
Remove the existing mounting box before installing the new support.
If the chandelier is between joists you need a fan brace but if it is under a ceiling joist a heavy duty junction box will be required.
Attach the chandelier
Assemble the chandelier following the manufacturer’s instructions but do not install the bulbs. Decide how long you need the chain and remove any excess by opening a link at the appropriate place. Then thread the wires through alternate links of the chain before attaching the wires. You will need to ensure the chandelier is well supported while you do this.
Instructions for connecting electrical wiring to your chandelier can be found at http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/replacelightfitting.htm.
Bolt the chandelier into place following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Test the chandelier
The final step is to install the bulbs and turn the power back on to ensure your chandelier is working correctly.
