We have been lucky to enjoy a glorious bank holiday weekend with the perfect weather for outdoor activities and hopefully this weather will hang around as we head into September.
Gloucestershire is a large county and encompasses the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds so walkers and people who like to be out and about in the open air are in for a real treat. It might be the end of summer but there are plenty of festivities still happening across the county. Newent onion fayre is an immensely popular street fayre that began in medieval times in the pretty Tudor market town of Newent. The onion eating competition pits those who are willing against each other to see who can eat a whole raw onion in the fastest time!
As well as this there is a wide range of stalls, food and funfair rides to enjoy. To get to the heart of rural Gloucestershire, then a visit to Frampton country fair is a must. Displays of dogs and equestrian events can be seen in the main ring, where you can see the activities of the bygone days on the farm that these fantastic animals played a huge part in. Traditional countryside crafts and activities are also being kept alive and demonstrations of a wide range of these go on throughout the day.
Walking in Gloucestershire is a hugely enjoyable activity full of fantastic scenery and dotted with country pubs that are the perfect place to stop for a hearty meal and a refreshing drink along your way. The Cotswold way is a spectacular trail taking in the beautiful surrounding countryside, and the Forest of Dean has huge areas of woodland to explore, along with gorgeous lakes including Mallards Pike, Soudley Ponds and Wenchford. These also include cycling trails for the whole family to enjoy.
Gloucester city is full of history and you can walk the footsteps of the Romans along the via sacra, visit the stunning Gloucester cathedral and explore the Victorian docks, Britain’s most inland port, that was the hub of industry and transport during the Industrial Revolution. Here you can also enjoy a scenic boat trip along the Gloucester and Sharpness canal.
