Training your dog on the lead

Trev September 15, 2018 Reviews Comments are off

Training a puppy to walk on a lead is no easy feat and it will take patience and time. Try not to tell your puppy off, as it will take them a while to understand what it is you expect of them. To make things go as smoothly as possible, choosing the right type of collar is very important. You will need a lightweight collar that is hardly felt by your puppy. The aim is not to frighten them or intimidate them.

The first collar should ideally have clips on to make it easier to put on without fussing with buckles and stressing him out. You simply pop it on and clip it together while he’s wearing it. Take a look at new Dog Collars and Leads. A range of dog collars and leads can be found online at https://iwoof.com

When you first introduce the collar, remember to offer him a reward so he associates it with good things. Make sure the treat is given whilst still wearing the collar, so he doesn’t associate a reward with having the collar taken off! Slowly build up the length of time that your puppy wears the collar so that he understands he’ll have to wear it whenever he’s out and about.

When your puppy seems unfazed by the collar anymore, it’s time to introduce the lead. Try it in the house to start with, don’t be tempted to go straight outside. Think of the lead as a safety device to stop him running off and not as a means for pulling him around wherever you want to go. If you don’t want a dog that pulls on the lead, don’t start by pulling him.

Clip the lead onto the collar and supply a treat. Once the lead is in place, use more treats to encourage him to move beside you, don’t pull. If you don’t want to provide too many treats, you can also use a favourite toy to encourage him around the house. Your puppy will begin to associate the lead with positive activities.

It’s important to remember to keep your treat or toy hand low and faced down to prevent your puppy from jumping up at you. The aim is to lure him to move around with you whilst on the lead with gentle persuasion as opposed to aggressive commands and pulling. This helps your puppy to understand that the lead is something he never has to feel the need to pull on himself.

If you experience any stress form your puppy whilst walking outside, try to place some treats along the path you’re taking and turn the activity into a rewards game. Show him that good things are ahead so he learns to approach things with curiosity and not feel afraid.
