Tips for Moving Out of Your Parent’s Home for the First Time

Moving out of your parent’s house for the first time, and I say the first time, because many of us end up going back, is scary but exciting. You may be going to a university too far away to commute to, so you will live in student accommodation, or you feel you are ready, perhaps more than ready, to take the first steps to living independently as an adult. Here are some tips for moving out of your parent’s home for the first time.

  1. Accept your parent’s help if they offer. You may be so eager to leave, that you stubbornly refuse to accept help. You do not have to prove you are an adult by doing everything yourself. If anything, by not accepting help when you need it, you are being more childish. Remember that this will likely be a big transition for your parents as well, so let them do whatever they need to do to feel better about it, as long as it’s not too intrusive of course. If driving you to your new accommodation is something they really want to do, let them! You will have a lot more obstacles ahead as you move further into adulthood, so don’t make your life harder than it needs to be.

  1. Budget and set up a saving’s account. If you have a student loan, it can be easy to think you have lots to spend. However, remember that money runs out quickly, and try not to think of your student loan as your money. This may help you be more inclined to save. If you are not a student, you will probably have more of a motivation to save, so budget and cook from home to save money.
  2. Lastly, if you can’t live without wi-fi. Make sure to set up your wi-fi well in advance for your move in date. Visit Vodafone Cavan to sort this out.
