Is it possible to over-clean?

Trev June 19, 2018 Reviews Comments are off

We are nation obsessed with cleaning. We might moan about it a lot, but we stick to our weekly rotas and insist in having sparkly surfaces you could eat your dinner off! Did you realise though, that’s possible to over clean your home? Not only is this a waste of your time, energy and money but you could actually be damaging the items you’re so desperate to protect. Here are some, perhaps surprising items, that we are most likely cleaning too often:

1. Wooden Furniture

Over cleaning wood furniture can actually make it dirtier! If you’re using a wax-based product, over time this can lead to an oily accumulation on the wood surface that attracts more dust and dirt. If you’re treating your wood furniture more than twice a month, this is way too much. You can always use a dry cloth for those in-between time cleans that you want to carry out. Why not leave your cleaning needs to a professional company such as Office cleaning in Gloucester by http://intocleaning.co.uk/services/office-cleaning/ ?

2. Dishes

Pre-rinsing or soaking won’t make your dishes any more sparkly than if you get them all wiped down in one go. If you think that pre-soaking dishes will speed up the dishwashing process, then you might be surprised to learn that it doesn’t take a lot of soap to effectively disinfect your dishes and glasses. Alternatively, save yourself the hassle and pop it all in the dishwasher!

3. Pots and Pans

When you get stuck-on food and hard to remove bits on your iron pots and pans, it seems only right that you would want to leave them to soak in soapy water. However, dishwashing soap will strip your pans of the lovely seasoning from your cooking over time. If you want better tasting meals, then consider using some salt to rid your pots and pans of stains instead. This won’t strip them of the good stuff then.

4. Jeans

If you stick your jeans in the wash after each wear, then you’re not doing them any good at all. Jeans are designed to be strong, durable and last a while between washes. If they are washed too much, the fabric will start to deteriorate, and they will lose their shape.

5. Carpets

It makes sense to crack open the carpet cleaner when someone spills their drink on your beloved beige carpet, right? However, using too much of this type of cleaner will damage the fibres and weaken your carpet. Consider using a natural remedy for ridding the carpet of unsightly stains, such as apple cider vinegar in a diluted form. You’ll be helping to prolong the life of your carpet.

6. Hands

We all understand the importance of washing our hands at certain times. After using the toilet, after handling raw foods and before cooking etc. While this remains as important as ever, if we wash our hands too much, we are actually killing off much of the good, immune-boosting bacteria too that live on our hands. Over-washing and too much reliance on anti-bacterial hand sanitisers can make it easier for antibiotic-resistant bacteria to enter our system, making us ill.
