What bedding plants to grow in Summer?

Here are some of the most popular bedding plants used in containers, hanging baskets and bedding borders to give you some beautiful flowers and colours for the Summer season.

Sweet Peas

These cottage garden plants have been incredibly popular for years and can often be seen in more traditional garden where they can climb up trellises or walls along netting. THey can reach heights of around 1.8 metres and will burst into colour during the summer when the beautiful flowers will start to emerge. Sweet peas can be found in a variety of colour and they all have a beautiful fragrance. They are often chosen as a popular cut flower, meaning htat once the blooms start to form you can cut stems and bring them into the house to enjoy their colour and scent in a vase on the table.

Begonias

These are probably the most popular summer bedding plant around and are incredibly versatile in the way in which they can be used. You will find them in planting borders, containers and hanging baskets in many gardens across the country. Again you can a variety of colours and styles with some having feather edged flowers and some producing many small flowers and other larger flower varieties.

Geraniums

These are also incredibly popular this time of year and are sun loving plants that don’t mind the temperature being a little hot and the humidity high. You can find trailing varieties for your hanging baskets and containers and well as climbing options for your trellises and uprights that you can plant in your flower beds and containers and troughs. The colour options are almost endless.

Antirrhinums

If you are looking for some flowers with a bit of height and a longer flowering period then look no further than antirrhinums. You can find plants that will grow to 90cm and dwarf varieties that will reach no higher than 25cms. They are a firm favourite with children as they have mouth like flowers on long stems, making them intriguing and full of interest.

All of these plants can be grown in borders as well as in containers and baskets. It is important that you regularly water them, especially in containers, as during the summer months they will dry out very quickly. You should also dead head any flowers that have gone passed their best to help the plant produce more flowers throughout the summer season.
