Cashmere jumpers are generally considered a luxury, with a price to reflect that. If you are going to spend a large amount of money on a cashmere jumper, expecting it to be soft and warm, you want to preserve that high quality for as long as possible. That means caring for it properly, not just throwing it in the washing machine with your other clothes.
What makes cashmere so special?
There are many special types of fibre in the world, including the Merino sheep’s wool used in mens Aran cardigans such as those at https://shoparan.com/mens-aran-sweaters/mens-aran-cardigans/. Like Merino, cashmere is known for being particularly soft and durable. But rather than coming from sheep, it originates with the cashmere (Kashmir) goat, specifically its undercoat.
If you buy a high-quality cashmere jumper and care for it properly, it could last ten years or more.
How to make your cashmere last
You do need to wash your cashmere regularly, even if it is not obviously dirty, but not in a washing machine. Hand Wash in some tepid water with a gentle baby shampoo, low-alkaline detergent or even a specialist cashmere wash. Soak, swirl, then remove. Press out excess water, but never twist, stretch or wring out a cashmere jumper. Then lie it out flat on a towel whilst it dries, reshaping as you go.
Once dry, fold your cashmere and place it in a drawer. Hanging could cause it to become misshapen. Shake it out every so often.
Cedar balls can be used to discourage moths. Sealing in a plastic bag and placing it in the freezer for a week will kill moth eggs or larvae. If you do find holes, it is best to send it to a specialist repairer.

For pilling removal, you can use a special cashmere comb, but a razor or electric debobbler could work too.
Buying a cashmere jumper means paying more for longer-lasting comfort. That means it is worth making the extra effort to wash it by hand and store it correctly. That is the only way to ensure it maintains its shape and quality.
