Foster carers can claim for a lot more than people first think and knowing what in advance allows us to plan and keep records from the off.
Clothing and Footwear
Most agencies and local authorities cover the cost of children’s clothing while they are in care. Initially the costs of clothes for children at the start of placement are covered by the agency or local authority. Foster carers keep receipts of costs of clothes for children in care. Foster carers note what clothes were bought for what reason and when.
School Trips and Activities
Day trips, after school clubs and activities, including sports equipment, can be claimed by Foster Carers. As with any costs prior to payment it is advisable to check with your Supervising Social Worker for prior approval where necessary.
Birthdays and Christmas
Allowances are given for special occasions like birthdays and at Christmas. Although these allowances vary between providers, knowing how much you have to spend helps you to plan and not overspend only to claim back the difference later.
Travel and Transport
Mileage to and from contact visits, to and from a child’s appointments, to and from school can be claimed. Foster carers record dates of travel, where they travelled to and the number of miles travelled.
Respite and Holiday Costs
Respite costs and holiday expenses are also available. However, these do have limits. If you are looking for Foster Care Wrexham, see //saferfostering.org.uk/foster-care-wales/wrexham/.
By keeping a record of all claims, foster carers can ensure that all relevant expenses are claimed.
