We all wear jeans. In fact they are seeing something of a strange renaissance again not that they ever went away. The weird thing about jeans is that they start to lose the coolness for a bit then it suddenly reasserts itself again. In the mid 1970’s they were out. Everyone wanted to go Glam or Disco then the Punks came along and rejected all that and they are back in again. In the early eighties they got ditched by the new Romantics, then Nick Kamen takes his off in a laundrette and Bros put rips in theirs and the jeans are back again.
The late eighties saw jeans on Kylie, Jason and the whole Hit Factory pop machine. However this time Jenas did not suffer. They were also being worn by Kurt Cobain and the British indie scene would still wear them only in Black instead. Then came the nineties and now they became Baggy and even flared when the Happy Mondays and the whole summer of love and Madchester held sway. This time they weren’t going away. Jeans remained solid until the late noughtie and One Direction. Jeans were out again and the Hip hop derivatives of Drill and Gangsta were not keen.
There was a reason for this. Their Dads wore blue jeans and it was the likes of Clarkson, May and Hammond of Top Gear, that began to make the youth think twice. It wasn’t cool. However along comes jeggings and the skinny fit and here they are again. Shows like Project Runway, Next in Fashion and even the Great British sewing bee have championed denim differently.
