We are a nation of dog lovers, there’s no doubt about that but do we favour some breeds over others? Figures from The Kennel Club look at the number of puppies born within a certain timeframe to work out which breeds are in demand. However, this doesn’t include non-pedigree dogs, so we don’t know whether the Labradoodle or the Cockapoo are top of the list. The list tends to remain consistent though year after year, with some breeds being ever popular.
- Labrador Retriever
Seen at or near the top of the list for the UK’s favourite breed every year. They were originally bred as gun dogs, but these days share our homes as loyal and loving family pets. The breed is smart, easily trainable, friendly and perfect to have around children. It’s no surprise then that the Lab Retriever is such a popular choice for UK families.
- English Springer Spaniel
Another breed traditionally used as a gun dog, Springers are great fun, full of energy and hugely lovable. They are affectionate, friendly and laid back. Ideal for families with children, the Springer has boundless energy and loves to play.
- Cocker Spaniel
We love our gun dogs in the UK, and the Cocker Spaniel has won ‘Best in Show’ a record seven times at Crufts, showing just what beautiful dogs, they are. Handsome, loyal, fun and full of beans, this breed, originally used as gun dogs, make delightful family pets. The name ‘Cocker’ comes from its great ability in hunting the Woodcock.
- German Shepherd
This breed is also commonly called the Alsatian and like the name suggests, is of Germanic origin. It is not an old breed as it wasn’t bred until the late 19th century. Despite their large appearance and use as guard dogs, they are highly loyal, very intelligent and brave which is why they are the breed chosen to work alongside police forces and the military.
- Golden Retriever
These chaps love to get wet so if you choose this breed, be prepared for lots of watery fun.
